It was about a month ago when we met this Indonesian singer-songwriter, Etza Meisyara with Mademoiselle or Madmoys as her pseudonym, playing a cover of The Kill’s Sour Cherry. Not much changes had been done to the song actually, but we’re surprised enough on how it was synthed in some places in the song. Later, we know that she had launched an album. So, we decided to go on a little interview about her music.

Etza was starting her music life being a drummer on her school bands. Having great interest in ethnic music, she later found Resiguru, a Post-Rock band with a taste of ethnic sounds, together with her friends. Not stopping there, she also started a solo project and started launching an indie album under the flag of Mizou net label-Japan, which also will be published in UK, Norway, Netherlands and Germany.

TWP: Would you tell us more about your music?

Etza: It was actually an idealistic side-project that meant to combine the taste of etnical and ambient to create an original music, but later was changed a bit to fit market’s taste cause y’know, we can’t be too idealistic in our music that nobody can get the meaning, the grasp of the music right?

TWP: Indeed. So, what kind of music inspires you? Of course they’re more of ambient music right?

Etza: Well, most of them are Icelandic and Japanese band. ‘Cause they are more into experimental. They were better in putting everything into music. Like water drips, people’s voice, they can transfer it to a meaningful music. Like Sigur Ros for example, they are able to make a great ambient music and make you feel like you’re in a different space.

TWP: I see. How about ethnic music? Why so obsessed with it?

Etza: Well, I was always love ethnical music, I love how they sounds and all. I think it soothe me when I hear it. That’s why I wanted to spread it to as many people as I can.

TWP: That’s great! What’s your vision on music movement and your career?

Etza: Well, since my music isn’t mainstream and not all people could enjoy it, I think I hope that people would be able to accept and wanted to explore more on musics. Not just taking what is served and ignoring or even excluding others.

TWP: Well, good point there. But how?

Etza: I think I’ll try to raise my name outside the country first so that when people had seen me and my works, I could later give more influence on the music movements and help people change perceptions in excluding musics.

TWP: Wow! That’s cool! I hope we can both help the music industry grow better. Thanks for the interview!

Etza: Your welcome!

Influence: John Lennon, Tokyo Jihen, Sigur Ros, Cocteau Twins, Bjork, Radiohead, Joy Division
